Image List with Credits in WordPress

What is an Image Source Directory?

An image source directory lists the sources of all images used in a document, presentation, or publication. It ensures transparency about the origin of the images and respects copyright.

Such directories are rare on websites because they typically need to be created manually. Publishers often provide photo credits directly with the images.

With Image Source Control, you can easily manage image sources and display them next to images or as a comprehensive image source directory on a dedicated page.

How to Create an Image Source Directory

When using the “Global List” feature in Image Source Control, you can modify how image sources are displayed. Choose from several formats or combine them, such as above or below the image, as a list below a post, or as a centralized image source directory.

Which Images Are Listed?

With Image Source Control, you can choose from three options for listing images in the global source directory:

Images with sources: Lists all Media Library images that have a specified source.

Images in the content: Lists images used in posts and pages, including featured images. Images outside this scope, such as those in the footer or sidebar, are excluded.

All images: Lists every image from the Media Library. Delete unused images beforehand for clarity.

When Should You Use an Image Source Directory?

Website owners and authors should always credit external image sources. Specific requirements depend on the image provider. Some may require the source directly on the image, while others may accept a centralized directory.

Many sites combine direct image credits with a centralized image source directory as a legal safeguard.

Some publishers place the directory on the Imprint page, while others prefer a dedicated page. In any case, it should be easily accessible via site navigation.
